Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP)
What is Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP)?
Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a protein primarily produced by the fetal liver and yolk sac during early development. In adults, AFP may also be produced by certain types of tumours, making it a useful biomarker in both oncology and prenatal screening.
AFP as a Tumour Marker
AFP is widely used as a tumour marker for cancers of the testicles, ovaries, and liver. Elevated AFP levels in the blood can indicate the presence of malignancies, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma and germ cell tumours. It also aids in monitoring treatment response and detecting cancer recurrence.
AFP in Non-Cancerous Conditions
Raised AFP levels can also be found in individuals with non-malignant liver conditions such as viral hepatitis and cirrhosis. Gastrointestinal tract tumours may also contribute to elevated AFP concentrations.
AFP Testing During Pregnancy
During pregnancy, AFP naturally increases and is measured as part of the quad screening test. This screening helps assess the risk of chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome. AFP levels can also help evaluate the likelihood of structural birth defects, including neural tube defects like spina bifida and abdominal wall defects such as omphalocele.
AFP Blood Testing in Slough and Surrounding Areas
Private AFP blood testing is available in Slough, Windsor, Langley, Burnham, and Maidenhead. Whether for cancer detection, liver disease evaluation, or prenatal screening, AFP testing offers essential insights for early diagnosis and personalised care. This test supports accurate medical assessment for individuals concerned about tumour markers, liver function, or pregnancy-related risks.
