Borrelia Burgdorferi IgG (Lyme Disease)

What Is Lyme Disease?

Lyme disease is an infectious condition caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, a spiral-shaped bacterium (spirochete) belonging to the Borrelia genus. It is primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of infected Ixodes species ticks, commonly known as deer ticks or black-legged ticks.

How Lyme Disease Is Spread

Transmission occurs when a tick infected with Borrelia burgdorferi bites and remains attached to the skin long enough to transfer the bacteria. Individuals who live in or travel to wooded or grassy areas are at increased risk of exposure.

Diagnostic Approach Using Serology

Serology is the only standardised laboratory method available to support the clinical diagnosis of Lyme borreliosis. These blood tests are specifically designed to detect the body’s immune response to Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto by measuring:

IgM antibodies – appear in the early stages of infection

IgG antibodies – develop later and remain present long after infection

Timing of Serological Tests

It is important to note that serological tests for Lyme disease may not yield a positive result immediately after infection. Antibodies take time to develop, meaning early testing could result in false negatives. Repeat testing may be necessary if symptoms persist.

Lyme Disease Testing in Slough and Surrounding Areas

Private serological testing for Lyme disease is available in Slough, Windsor, Langley, Maidenhead, and nearby areas. If you have symptoms of Lyme disease or a history of tick exposure, local testing services in Slough provide accurate IgM and IgG antibody detection to support timely diagnosis and effective treatment.
