What is Cancer Antigen 50 (CA 50)?

Cancer Antigen 50 (CA 50) is a tumour marker protein found on the surface of certain cancer cells, particularly those originating in the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, and liver. It is measured through a blood test and can support the diagnosis and monitoring of various cancers.

Diagnostic Use of CA 50 Testing

CA 50 is not specific to a single type of cancer, but elevated levels may indicate the presence of malignancy. Because false positives can occur, CA 50 is usually used alongside other diagnostic methods such as imaging scans, clinical evaluations, and biopsies for a more accurate diagnosis.

Although helpful in cancer management, CA 50 is not a definitive diagnostic tool. Its levels do not always directly correlate with cancer progression or treatment response. Additionally, non-cancerous conditions—such as liver disease or inflammation—may also cause elevated CA 50 levels.
