Fibrinogen

Fibrinogen is a protein produced by the liver that plays a key role in blood clotting. It is converted into fibrin, a fibrous protein that forms a mesh-like structure during blood clotting to help stop bleeding. Fibrinogen levels can be measured through a blood test and are used to evaluate the risk of bleeding or clotting disorders. High fibrinogen levels can indicate an increased risk of blood clot formation, which can lead to conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, and stroke. In contrast, low fibrinogen levels can increase the risk of bleeding, which can be seen in conditions such as liver disease, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), and some types of cancer.
