Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH)

Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. In women, FSH plays a key role in regulating the menstrual cycle and stimulating the growth and maturation of ovarian follicles, which contain eggs. In men, FSH stimulates the production of sperm by the testes. FSH levels can be measured through a blood test and are used to evaluate fertility issues and monitor ovulation induction therapies. In women, FSH levels rise at the beginning of the menstrual cycle, stimulating the growth of ovarian follicles. High FSH levels may indicate ovarian dysfunction or early menopause, while low FSH levels may indicate a lack of ovarian reserve or other issues. In men, FSH levels can be used to evaluate testicular function and diagnose conditions such as hypogonadism, which is characterized by low testosterone levels and may cause infertility, erectile dysfunction, and other symptoms.
