Hepatitis B: HB Core IgM (HBc IgM)
What Is Hepatitis B Core Antigen (HBcAg)?
Hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg) is a non-glycosylated protein (p22) that forms the inner core or nucleocapsid of the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It plays a key structural role in the virus and is a significant marker in the immune response to HBV infection.
Immune Response and Anti-HBc Antibodies
During an HBV infection, the body produces antibodies against HBcAg, known as anti-HBc. These antibodies typically appear shortly after the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) becomes detectable and often remain in the bloodstream for life, indicating past or ongoing infection.
Role of IgM Anti-HBc in Diagnosis
IgM antibodies to HBcAg emerge during the active replication phase of the virus. These antibodies are valuable diagnostic markers and can be detected in the blood for weeks to months, even after viral replication has subsided.
Clinical Significance in Acute and Chronic Infection
High levels of anti-HBc IgM are commonly observed during acute hepatitis B infection and during flare-ups in chronic hepatitis B. Their detection supports early diagnosis and monitoring of disease activity.
Private Anti-HBc IgM Testing in Slough
Patients in Slough, Windsor, Maidenhead, and surrounding Berkshire areas can access private anti-HBc IgM testing to identify acute or reactivated hepatitis B infection. This test provides essential insights into disease status, helping guide treatment decisions and long-term liver health management.
