Herpes Simplex 1 IgG (HSV-1)
HSV-1 IgG is a blood test used to detect the presence of IgG antibodies to herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), which is a common viral infection that causes cold sores or fever blisters around the mouth and lips. IgG antibodies are produced by the immune system in response to an infection, and are typically detectable within a few weeks of initial exposure. The HSV-1 IgG test is used to diagnose past or previous infections with this virus. Once a person has been infected with HSV-1, they will typically develop lifelong immunity to the virus, and their IgG antibody levels will remain detectable on subsequent tests. However, the presence of IgG antibodies does not necessarily indicate that the infection is currently active or causing symptoms. HSV-1 IgG testing may be ordered for individuals with a history of cold sores or other symptoms suggestive of HSV-1 infection, or for those who may have been exposed to the virus through close personal contact with someone who has an active infection. It may also be ordered as part of routine screening for sexually transmitted infections.
