Homocysteine
Homocysteine is an amino acid that is produced during the normal metabolism of methionine, another amino acid found in proteins. High levels of homocysteine in the blood, a condition known as hyperhomocysteinemia, have been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and other health problems. There are several factors that can contribute to high levels of homocysteine in the blood, including genetic factors, lifestyle factors such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, and certain medical conditions such as kidney disease and hypothyroidism. High levels of homocysteine in the blood can cause damage to the lining of blood vessels and increase the risk of blood clots, which can lead to cardiovascular disease, stroke, and other health problems. Studies have also suggested that high levels of homocysteine may be associated with an increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia in older adults. Testing for homocysteine levels in the blood may be recommended for people with a family history of cardiovascular disease, those with a personal history of cardiovascular disease or stroke, and those with other risk factors such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol.
