Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG Intact + Free β-Subunit)
Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) is a hormone produced by the placenta during pregnancy. Its main function is to stimulate the production of progesterone, a hormone that helps prepare the uterus for the implantation and growth of the fertilized egg. hCG levels can be measured through a blood or urine test, and are commonly used as a marker for pregnancy. In the early stages of pregnancy, hCG levels rise rapidly and can be detected in the blood or urine within days of a missed period. The levels of hCG continue to rise during the first trimester, and then gradually decrease as the pregnancy progresses. hCG can also be used to diagnose and monitor certain medical conditions. For example, hCG levels can be elevated in certain types of cancer, such as testicular or ovarian cancer. hCG levels can also be used to monitor the progress of certain medical treatments, such as fertility treatments or treatment for certain types of cancer.
