Immunoglobulin M (IgM)

Immunoglobulin M (IgM) is a type of antibody that is produced by plasma cells in response to an infection. It is the first antibody to be produced in response to a new infection, and it plays an important role in the immune system's defense against pathogens. IgM antibodies are larger in size compared to other antibodies, and they are mainly found in the blood and lymph fluid. They are highly efficient in binding to and neutralizing pathogens, and they can activate complement, a group of proteins that help to destroy invading pathogens. Tests for IgM antibodies can be useful in diagnosing acute infections, such as viral or bacterial infections, because IgM is the first antibody produced in response to a new infection. High levels of IgM antibodies in the blood may indicate an active infection, while low levels may indicate that the infection has been resolved. However, it's important to note that IgM antibodies can persist in the blood for weeks to months after an infection has resolved, so a positive IgM test result does not necessarily mean that a person is currently infected. IgM tests are often used in combination with other tests, such as IgG tests or viral antigen tests, to diagnose acute infections.
