Iron

What is an Iron Test?
The iron test measures the amount of iron bound to transferrin, a protein responsible for transporting iron from the intestine to cells that require it. Iron plays a critical role in producing haemoglobin and supporting various bodily functions.

Fluctuations in Blood Iron Levels
Iron levels in the blood can vary significantly throughout the day and between days. For this reason, a standalone serum iron test may not provide a complete picture of a person's iron status.

Comprehensive Iron Studies
To accurately assess iron levels, the serum iron test is usually conducted alongside other diagnostic tests, including:

Transferrin

Ferritin

TIBC (Total Iron Binding Capacity)

UIBC (Unsaturated Iron Binding Capacity)

When Are Iron Tests Recommended?
Iron blood tests are typically requested if a healthcare provider suspects:

Iron poisoning

Iron overload (haemochromatosis)

Iron deficiency anaemia
Excess iron can result from genetic conditions such as hereditary haemochromatosis or from repeated blood transfusions.

Assessing Iron Overload with Transferrin Saturation
If iron overload is suspected, both iron and transferrin levels are measured. Transferrin saturation is then calculated to determine how much iron is being carried in the bloodstream and how much capacity remains for additional iron.

Private Iron Testing in Slough and Surrounding Areas
Private iron blood tests, including ferritin, transferrin saturation, TIBC, and UIBC, are available in Slough, Windsor, Maidenhead, and nearby Berkshire locations. These comprehensive tests help in the early diagnosis and management of iron deficiency or iron overload conditions.
