Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
Luteinizing hormone (LH) is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. In women, LH plays a key role in regulating the menstrual cycle and promoting ovulation. In men, LH stimulates the production of testosterone by the testes. LH levels can be measured through a blood test and are used to evaluate fertility issues and monitor ovulation induction therapies. In women, LH levels surge just before ovulation, triggering the release of an egg from the ovary. LH levels can therefore be used to help time fertility treatments, such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF). In men, LH levels can be used to evaluate testicular function and diagnose conditions such as hypogonadism, which is characterized by low testosterone levels and may cause infertility, erectile dysfunction, and other symptoms.
