Lymphocyte Subsets (CD57)

The Lymphocyte Subsets (CD57) Test measures CD57+ lymphocytes, a subset of natural killer (NK) cells and T-cells involved in immune function. CD57 is often associated with chronic infections, immune dysregulation, and certain neurological or autoimmune conditions. This test helps assess immune system status and guide treatment decisions in patients with persistent infections or immune-related disorders. Why it is important to check this marker: CD57+ cells play a role in immune surveillance and response. Abnormal levels may indicate chronic infections, immune exhaustion, or autoimmune dysfunction, making this test valuable in assessing long-term immune health. Indications for testing: - Chronic infections: Particularly Lyme disease, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), or cytomegalovirus (CMV). - Immune system evaluation: In patients with fatigue, persistent infections, or suspected immune dysfunction. - Autoimmune disorders: To assess immune involvement in conditions such as multiple sclerosis or rheumatoid arthritis. - Neurological conditions: Investigating potential links between immune function and neurodegenerative diseases. What can be detected: - Chronic Lyme disease: Low CD57+ NK cell levels may be linked to prolonged Lyme disease symptoms. - Immune dysfunction: CD57+ abnormalities can suggest immune exhaustion or dysregulation. - Autoimmune and neurological diseases: Altered levels may be associated with conditions affecting the nervous and immune systems. This test is a valuable tool for understanding immune health, particularly in chronic infections and autoimmune conditions, aiding in diagnosis and treatment planning.
