Sputum

What is a Sputum Culture?
A sputum culture is a laboratory test designed to detect and identify bacteria, fungi, or other pathogens in mucus (sputum) expelled from the lungs. It plays a vital role in diagnosing respiratory infections and helps determine the exact microorganism involved, allowing for targeted and effective treatment.

When is a Sputum Culture Recommended?
This test is commonly requested for individuals showing signs of respiratory issues, including:

Ongoing cough with mucus production

Shortness of breath or chest pain

Suspected lung infections such as pneumonia, bronchitis, or tuberculosis

Chronic respiratory diseases like COPD or cystic fibrosis

Possible fungal infections of the lungs

Evaluation of treatment effectiveness for existing infections

Is Fasting Required?
Fasting is not necessary for a sputum culture. However, it is best to collect the sample early in the morning before eating or drinking to improve the quality of the specimen.

How the Test is Conducted
Once collected, the sputum sample is sent to a laboratory where it is placed in a controlled environment to allow any microorganisms to grow. If bacteria or fungi are present, they can be identified accurately. Test results are usually available within a few days, depending on how quickly the organisms develop.
