Sputum

A sputum culture is a diagnostic test used to detect and identify bacteria, fungi, or other pathogens in the sputum (mucus or phlegm) that is coughed up from the lungs. This test is particularly useful for diagnosing respiratory infections and determining the specific microorganism responsible, allowing for more targeted treatment. Indications for testing: A sputum culture is commonly ordered for patients experiencing: - Persistent cough with mucus production - Difficulty breathing or chest pain - Symptoms of lung infections, such as pneumonia, bronchitis, or tuberculosis - Chronic respiratory conditions, like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or cystic fibrosis - Suspected fungal lung infections - Monitoring the effectiveness of treatment for respiratory infections Fasting requirements: No fasting required. However, it is recommended to collect the sample early in the morning before eating or drinking, as this increases the likelihood of obtaining a good-quality sample. How the test works: Once a sample of sputum is collected, it is sent to a laboratory where it is cultured in a controlled environment. If microorganisms are present, they will grow, and the lab can then identify the specific type of bacteria or fungus. Results are typically available within a few days, depending on the growth rate of the organism.
