What Is the VDRL Test?

The Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) test is a blood screening test used to detect syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It identifies antibodies produced by the immune system in response to the infection.

How the VDRL Test Works

The VDRL test detects non-specific antibodies associated with syphilis infection. While it is useful for initial screening, it does not directly identify the T. pallidum bacterium. Instead, it signals the body’s immune response, which can sometimes be triggered by other conditions.

Limitations and False Positives

The VDRL test is not exclusive to syphilis, and false positive results may occur due to factors such as autoimmune disorders, HIV infection, and even pregnancy. Because of this, any positive VDRL result must be confirmed with more specific tests.

Confirmatory Testing for Syphilis

If the VDRL test yields a positive result, confirmatory testing is typically done using more specific treponemal tests, such as:

Treponema pallidum Particle Agglutination (TPPA) test

Fluorescent Treponemal Antibody Absorption (FTA-ABS) test

These confirmatory tests help ensure an accurate diagnosis of syphilis.
