Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin, is a water-soluble vitamin that is essential for the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system, as well as the formation of red blood cells. It is found naturally in animal products such as meat, fish, dairy, and eggs, and is also available in supplement form. Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to a wide range of symptoms, including fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, tingling and numbness in the hands and feet, depression, and cognitive impairment. It can also lead to anemia, a condition in which the body does not have enough red blood cells to carry oxygen to the tissues. Vitamin B12 levels can be measured through a blood test, which can help identify deficiencies and guide treatment. Vitamin B12 deficiency can be caused by a number of factors, including inadequate dietary intake, malabsorption, and certain medical conditions. It is most commonly seen in older adults, vegetarians and vegans, and individuals with gastrointestinal disorders such as Crohn's disease and celiac disease. Treatment for vitamin B12 deficiency typically involves vitamin B12 supplementation, either through injections or oral supplements.
