Zonulin

The zonulin test is a diagnostic tool used to measure the levels of zonulin, a protein that regulates the permeability of the gut lining. Zonulin plays a key role in maintaining the integrity of the intestinal barrier, controlling how substances pass through the gut wall into the bloodstream. Elevated zonulin levels can indicate increased intestinal permeability, commonly referred to as "leaky gut," which has been linked to various health issues. Why zonulin is important Zonulin helps regulate the tight junctions between gut cells, ensuring that only necessary nutrients pass through while keeping harmful substances out. When zonulin levels are elevated, these tight junctions can become loosened, leading to a compromised gut barrier. This increased permeability can allow undigested food particles, toxins, and pathogens to enter the bloodstream, potentially triggering immune responses and inflammation. Indications for testing - Persistent gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating, diarrhea, or abdominal pain - Autoimmune conditions, including celiac disease and Crohn’s disease - Food sensitivities or allergies - Chronic inflammation or unexplained fatigue - Suspected leaky gut syndrome - Monitoring gut health in patients with metabolic syndrome or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) How to prepare No special preparation is typically required for a zonulin test.
