Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD)

G6PD (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase) is an enzyme that plays a key role in protecting red blood cells from damage caused by oxidative stress. It is important for the proper functioning and survival of red blood cells, which carry oxygen throughout the body. G6PD deficiency is a genetic disorder in which the body does not produce enough G6PD, leading to a decreased ability to protect red blood cells from oxidative stress. This can cause hemolysis (destruction of red blood cells), leading to anemia, jaundice, and other symptoms. G6PD deficiency is more common in males and in people of African, Mediterranean, or Asian descent.
