Gastrointestinal (GI) Screen
The Gastrointestinal (GI) Screen is a comprehensive diagnostic test designed to detect the presence of helminths, also known as parasitic worms, within the digestive tract. These parasites can cause a range of gastrointestinal symptoms, nutrient deficiencies, and general discomfort. Early detection through stool or blood analysis helps prevent complications and ensures timely treatment.
Common Helminths Detected
Tapeworms (Taenia spp.): Flat, segmented worms that inhabit the intestines. They can lead to symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and weight loss.
Roundworms (Ascaris spp.): Long, cylindrical worms that may cause bloating, nausea, and digestive upset.
Hookworms (Ancylostoma spp. and Necator americanus): Small intestinal worms that can cause anemia, fatigue, and abdominal discomfort due to blood loss.
Whipworms (Trichuris trichiura): Whip-like worms that can trigger chronic diarrhea, weight loss, and abdominal cramping.
Strongyloides spp.: Threadworms that can cause gastrointestinal irritation, rash, and respiratory symptoms in severe infections.
Hymenolepis spp.: Small tapeworms typically found in children, often causing restlessness, abdominal pain, and poor appetite.
Enterobius vermicularis (Pinworm): Common intestinal parasite causing itching, irritability, and disturbed sleep.
Enterocytozoon spp. / Encephalitozoon spp.: Microsporidian parasites associated with chronic diarrhea, especially in immunocompromised individuals.
