Ammonia

An ammonia blood test measures the level of ammonia in the blood. Ammonia is a waste product produced by the body when it breaks down proteins. The liver normally converts ammonia into urea, which is then excreted by the kidneys in urine. However, if the liver is damaged or not functioning properly, it may not be able to convert ammonia into urea, leading to an accumulation of ammonia in the blood. An ammonia blood test is typically ordered to evaluate liver function in individuals with symptoms such as confusion, difficulty concentrating, and lethargy. It may also be used to monitor individuals with liver disease or to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment for conditions such as cirrhosis.
