Herpes Simplex 2 IgG (HSV-2)

HSV-2 IgG is a type of blood test used to detect the presence of antibodies to the herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), which is the virus that causes genital herpes. This test is used to determine whether a person has been exposed to the virus and has developed an immune response, which can indicate a current or past infection. The test works by detecting the presence of immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies in the blood. IgG is a type of antibody that is produced by the immune system in response to an infection. Once a person is infected with HSV-2, their immune system produces IgG antibodies to fight the virus. These antibodies can persist in the blood for many years, even after the virus has been cleared from the body. If a person suspects they have genital herpes, their healthcare provider may use other diagnostic methods, such as a viral culture or PCR test, to confirm the diagnosis. Additionally, symptoms such as painful genital sores or blisters may also be used to diagnose genital herpes.
