Androstenedione
Androstenedione is a steroid hormone produced mainly in the adrenal glands, ovaries, and testes. It is a precursor hormone to both testosterone and estrogen, and is therefore considered an androgen. In women, androstenedione is produced mainly in the ovaries and adrenal glands, and is converted into estrone and small amounts of testosterone in peripheral tissues such as fat and muscle. In men, androstenedione is produced mainly in the testes and converted into testosterone. Androstenedione levels in the blood can be measured through a blood test, and are often used to evaluate adrenal function, as well as to diagnose and monitor certain conditions, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and some types of cancer. It is important to note that androstenedione levels can vary depending on age, sex, and other factors, and may not necessarily indicate a specific medical condition. Additional tests and a thorough medical evaluation are usually required to make a diagnosis.
