About this profile

Gastrointestinal (GI) Parasite Screen
The Gastrointestinal (GI) Parasite Screen is a specialised diagnostic test designed to detect the presence of intestinal parasites that can cause gastrointestinal disturbances and nutrient absorption issues. Parasites are organisms that live within the digestive tract, relying on the host for survival and often leading to symptoms such as diarrhea, bloating, abdominal pain, fatigue, and unexplained weight loss.

This screening helps identify parasitic infections early, supporting effective treatment and preventing chronic digestive complications. It is particularly useful for individuals experiencing persistent gastrointestinal symptoms, recent travel to high-risk areas, or exposure to contaminated food or water.

Exams Included

Blastocystis hominis: A common intestinal parasite linked to symptoms like abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, and fatigue.

Cryptosporidium spp.: Causes severe watery diarrhea and dehydration, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems.

Cyclospora cayetanensis: Associated with prolonged diarrhea, cramping, and nausea, often contracted from contaminated produce or water.

Dientamoeba fragilis: May cause chronic digestive symptoms, including bloating, abdominal pain, and irregular bowel movements.

Entamoeba histolytica: Responsible for amoebic dysentery, which can lead to severe diarrhea and intestinal inflammation.

Giardia lamblia: Causes giardiasis, a common parasitic infection leading to bloating, flatulence, and greasy stools.
