About this profile

The Sexual Health Profile I – Male is a focused screening test designed to detect common bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in men. This profile combines a male genital swab culture with a Chlamydia trachomatis antigen (urine) test, offering a comprehensive evaluation of sexual health and identifying infections that may affect reproductive and urinary function. Early testing helps prevent complications and reduces the risk of transmission.

Indications for testing
This test is recommended for men who:
– Are sexually active and want to ensure they are free from common STIs.
– Have engaged in unprotected sexual activity or recently changed partners.
– Experience symptoms such as penile discharge, irritation, itching, or pain during urination.
– Require routine STI screening as part of general health checks.
– Have a partner who has tested positive for an STI.

What can be detected?
The Sexual Health Profile I – Male includes testing for a range of bacterial and parasitic infections through urine and swab analysis:

Chlamydia trachomatis (Urine): Detects Chlamydia trachomatis, a common bacterial STI that can cause inflammation of the urethra, discharge, and pelvic discomfort. If left untreated, it can lead to complications such as infertility.

Male Genital Swab Culture: Identifies the presence of bacterial and fungal infections affecting the genital area, including:

Neisseria gonorrhoeae – The bacterium responsible for gonorrhea.

Trichomonas vaginalis – A parasitic STI that can cause irritation and discharge.

Candida spp. – Yeast responsible for fungal infections that may cause itching and redness.

Staphylococcus aureus – A bacterium that can cause local or systemic infections.

Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus, GBS) – Bacteria that may cause genital or urinary tract infections.

By detecting these pathogens early, this test allows for timely treatment, reducing risks of complications and preventing further spread of infections.

Fasting requirements
Fasting is not required for this test. However, it is advised to avoid urination for 1–2 hours prior to providing a urine sample for accurate results.
