The TORCH Profile is a detailed blood test designed to detect infections that may affect pregnant women and their unborn babies. It screens for specific antibodies against key pathogens responsible for congenital infections, helping to ensure early detection and proper management during pregnancy.
What is included in the TORCH profile?
This profile measures antibodies against several infections that can cause complications during pregnancy or affect fetal development:
– Toxoplasma gondii IgG and IgM: Detects antibodies to the parasite responsible for toxoplasmosis, which can lead to serious birth complications if transmitted from mother to baby.
– Rubella Virus IgG and IgM: Identifies immunity or active infection with the rubella virus, known for causing congenital rubella syndrome if contracted during pregnancy.
– Cytomegalovirus (CMV) IgG and IgM: Detects antibodies against cytomegalovirus, a common virus that may result in developmental issues or hearing loss in newborns.
– Herpes Simplex Virus 1 IgG and 2 IgG (HSV-1 & HSV-2): Identifies past exposure to herpes simplex viruses, which can be transmitted during childbirth and affect the newborn’s health.
Who is this test for?
The TORCH Profile is recommended for:
– Pregnant women to check for infections that could harm the fetus.
– Women planning to conceive, to assess immunity or exposure to infections.
– Individuals showing symptoms such as rash, fever, or swollen lymph nodes.
– Routine prenatal health checks to monitor infection status and immune protection.
What can be detected
The TORCH Profile identifies both active and past infections, allowing healthcare providers to evaluate immune status and potential risks to pregnancy. By detecting IgM (active infection) and IgG (past infection or immunity) antibodies, it provides a clear understanding of maternal and fetal health risks.
Fasting requirements
Fasting is not necessary for this test. A standard blood sample is sufficient for accurate analysis.
