α1-Acid Glycoprotein

The α1-Acid Glycoprotein (AGP) blood test measures the level of AGP in the blood. AGP is a type of protein that is produced by the liver in response to inflammation or infection. The test is used to help diagnose and monitor various inflammatory and infectious conditions. The AGP blood test is often ordered alongside other tests, such as the C-reactive protein (CRP) test and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) test, to help diagnose and monitor inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and inflammatory bowel disease. It can also be used to monitor the response to treatment and to detect disease recurrence. The test is also useful in monitoring infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and HIV, as AGP levels rise in response to these infections. The test may be ordered when a person has symptoms of infection, such as fever, fatigue, and weight loss.
