ASMA, or Anti-Smooth Muscle Antibodies, are autoantibodies found in the blood that target the smooth muscle tissue in the body. These antibodies are commonly associated with certain autoimmune and chronic liver diseases.

Role of ASMA in Autoimmune Hepatitis

The ASMA blood test is primarily used as a diagnostic marker for Autoimmune Hepatitis (AIH)—a chronic liver condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy liver cells. This autoimmune activity leads to liver inflammation, fibrosis (scarring), and, if left untreated, can progress to liver failure.
