Gliadin IgA

Gliadin IgA refers to the presence of immunoglobulin A (IgA) antibodies against gliadin, a protein found in gluten, in the blood. IgA antibodies are produced by the immune system in response to an antigen, such as gliadin. In some people, the immune system may produce IgA antibodies against gliadin even when there is no actual damage to the intestinal lining. This is known as non-celiac gluten sensitivity, which is different from celiac disease where the immune response to gluten damages the intestinal lining. A positive gliadin IgA test does not necessarily mean that an individual has celiac disease, as other factors can also cause elevated levels of gliadin antibodies, such as infections or other autoimmune disorders. However, gliadin IgA testing may be used as part of the diagnostic process for celiac disease, along with other tests such as tissue transglutaminase (tTG) IgA and endomysial (EMA) IgA antibodies, and biopsy of the small intestine.
