Calprotectin

Fecal calprotectin is a biomarker protein that is released by neutrophils, a type of white blood cell, during inflammation in the intestines. It is a non-invasive test that can be used to measure the level of inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. Fecal calprotectin testing is often used in the diagnosis and monitoring of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Elevated levels of fecal calprotectin are indicative of active inflammation in the intestines and can help healthcare providers assess the severity of the disease and determine the most appropriate course of treatment. In addition to IBD, elevated levels of fecal calprotectin can also be associated with other gastrointestinal conditions, such as celiac disease, bacterial gastroenteritis, and colorectal cancer. It can also be elevated in non-gastrointestinal conditions, such as infections and rheumatological diseases.
