About this test
What Is Hepatitis B e Antigen (HBeAg)?
Hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) is a viral protein produced from the pre-C/C gene of the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It is typically found in liver cells (hepatocytes) during active viral replication.
HBeAg in Acute Hepatitis B Infection
HBeAg appears in the bloodstream during the early stages of acute hepatitis B infection and remains detectable for a short period, typically lasting from a few days to several weeks. Its presence is usually associated with high levels of viral replication and increased infectivity.
Serological Changes During Recovery
As the immune system begins to control the infection, HBeAg becomes undetectable and is replaced by the corresponding antibody, known as anti-HBe. This transition often indicates the start of recovery and a decrease in viral activity.
HBeAg-Negative Infections and Precore Mutants
Some individuals with acute or chronic HBV infection may not show detectable HBeAg. In such cases, the presence of anti-HBe antibodies suggests infection with HBV variants known as precore stop codon mutants. These variants may still be associated with varying levels of viral replication, from high to undetectable.
Importance of HBeAg and Anti-HBe Testing Together
Combining HBeAg and anti-HBe testing provides a more comprehensive view of the infection’s stage and activity. It helps clinicians monitor disease progression and make informed treatment decisions.
Private HBeAg and Anti-HBe Testing in Slough
Patients in Slough, Windsor, Maidenhead, and surrounding Berkshire areas can access private hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) and anti-HBe testing for accurate monitoring of HBV infection. These tests are crucial for evaluating viral load, assessing infectivity, and guiding long-term liver health management.
