What is an ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate) Test?

The Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) test is a simple, low-cost, and non-specific blood test used to detect inflammation in the body. It helps identify the presence of acute or chronic inflammatory conditions, including infections, cancers, and autoimmune disorders.

How ESR Works

ESR measures how quickly red blood cells settle at the bottom of a test tube over a set period. A faster-than-normal rate may indicate inflammation, though it does not pinpoint the exact location or cause of the issue.

ESR as a Non-Specific Inflammatory Marker

While ESR is useful, it is considered non-specific because elevated levels may result from a variety of causes unrelated to inflammation. These can include anemia, pregnancy, ageing, and other medical conditions. Therefore, ESR results are typically interpreted alongside other diagnostic tests and clinical findings.

Polymyalgia rheumatica
