About this test

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and Cervical Cancer

Persistent infection with human papillomavirus (HPV) is the primary cause of cervical cancer and its precursor, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). More than 99% of cervical cancer cases globally are linked to HPV infection, making it a critical factor in cervical disease development.

HPV Structure and Types

HPV is a small, non-enveloped, double-stranded DNA virus with a genome of approximately 8,000 nucleotides. There are over 118 known types of HPV, with around 40 types capable of infecting the human anogenital mucosa. These types vary significantly in their potential to cause cancer.

HPV Risk Classification

HPV types are grouped based on their oncogenic (cancer-causing) potential:

High-Risk HPV Types
These types are strongly associated with the development of cervical cancer and other anogenital malignancies:

HPV 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39

HPV 45, 51, 52, 56, 58

HPV 59, 66, 68, 73, 82

Low-Risk HPV Types
These types are typically linked to benign conditions, such as genital warts, and have minimal risk of progressing to cancer:

HPV 6, 11, 40, 42, 43, 44

HPV 54, 61, 70, 72, 81
