What Is an RBC Magnesium Test?

The RBC (Red Blood Cell) Magnesium test measures the amount of magnesium within red blood cells, offering a more accurate assessment of magnesium status inside the body’s cells than a standard serum magnesium test.

Consequences of Low Magnesium Levels

Serum vs. RBC Magnesium Testing

While a standard serum magnesium test checks circulating magnesium levels, it reflects only about 1% of the body’s total magnesium. This can lead to misleading results if cellular levels are deficient. The RBC magnesium test provides a more precise picture by measuring magnesium stored in red blood cells, offering better insight into long-term and intracellular magnesium status.
