About this test

What Is an RBC Zinc Test?

The RBC (Red Blood Cell) Zinc test measures the amount of zinc stored within red blood cells, offering a more accurate representation of zinc levels in the body compared to a standard serum zinc test.

The Importance of Zinc

Zinc is an essential trace mineral involved in immune function, wound healing, DNA synthesis, and cellular metabolism.

Why Zinc Is Necessary

Zinc supports a wide range of biological processes including immune defense, protein production, wound repair, and normal growth and development, especially during pregnancy, childhood, and adolescence. It also plays a role in maintaining a healthy sense of taste and smell, as well as skin integrity.

When Testing May Be Needed

Frequent infections or a weakened immune system

Delayed wound healing or chronic skin conditions

Hair thinning or brittle nails

Reduced sense of taste or smell

Digestive disorders or malabsorption issues

Suspected deficiency due to chronic illness, poor diet, or ongoing stress

Skin conditions such as acne, dermatitis, or psoriasis

Who Should Consider This Test

This test is particularly useful for individuals with gastrointestinal conditions such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, or celiac disease, and those receiving long-term parenteral nutrition, all of which may lead to zinc deficiency.

Serum vs. RBC Zinc Testing

While a serum zinc test assesses the level of zinc in blood plasma, most of the body's zinc is found within cells. As a result, serum levels may appear normal even in the presence of a deficiency. RBC zinc testing provides a more reliable indication of the body’s zinc status by evaluating intracellular zinc concentrations.

Test Preparation

Patients are typically advised to fast for 8 to 12 hours before the test for more accurate results. Zinc supplements should be avoided for at least 24 hours prior to testing unless otherwise directed by a healthcare provider. Always follow the specific preparation instructions provided by your healthcare team.
