About this profile
This test checks a stool sample for signs of both bacterial and parasitic infection in one combined screen, rather than needing two separate tests. It's a broader option than testing for bacteria or parasites alone, useful when gut symptoms could plausibly have more than one cause.
It's worth considering if you have ongoing digestive symptoms such as diarrhoea, abdominal cramping, bloating, or unexplained weight loss, particularly after travel abroad, a suspected episode of food poisoning, or symptoms that haven't settled on their own. It's also used to rule out an infectious cause before investigating other possibilities such as IBS or inflammatory bowel disease.
A fresh stool sample is required, collected into a sterile container and kept away from contamination with urine or water, since that can affect the accuracy of the result.
