About this profile
This test uses PCR (polymerase chain reaction) technology to detect bacterial pathogens directly from a stool sample, rather than relying on traditional culture growth alone. PCR testing can identify a wider range of bacteria more quickly and with greater sensitivity than conventional stool culture, which is useful when symptoms suggest an infection that a standard culture might miss.
It's a good option if you have persistent or severe digestive symptoms such as diarrhoea, abdominal pain, or fever, especially if a standard stool test hasn't given a clear answer, or if you need a faster, more precise result — for example before or after travel, or if symptoms started suddenly and severely.
A fresh stool sample is required, collected into a sterile container and kept away from contamination with urine or water.
