About this profile

The oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) 0'–60'–120' measures blood glucose at three points — fasting, one hour, and two hours after drinking a glucose solution — giving a fuller picture of how your body handles sugar than a simple two-point test. It's mainly used to diagnose type 2 diabetes and prediabetes, and to screen for gestational diabetes in pregnancy, usually between weeks 24 and 28.

It's also used more broadly than just diabetes screening. Some people are tested because their fasting glucose has come back borderline high on a previous test, others because they're showing symptoms like unusual thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, fatigue or dizziness. The extra one-hour reading can also help pick up cases of reactive hypoglycaemia, where blood sugar drops too low after eating, which a standard fasting/two-hour test alone might miss.

You're a reasonable candidate for this test if you have risk factors for type 2 diabetes such as obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, high blood pressure or a family history of diabetes, if you're pregnant and due for routine gestational diabetes screening, or if a previous blood test has already flagged borderline glucose levels.

Three blood samples are taken in one visit — fasting, then one hour and two hours after the glucose drink — and fasting for 8–12 hours beforehand is required. Results are typically available within 4 hours.
