What Is Lyme Disease?

Lyme disease is an infectious illness caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, a spirochete belonging to the genus Borrelia. This bacterium is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected Ixodes species ticks, commonly known as deer ticks or black-legged ticks.

How Lyme Disease Is Transmitted

The bacteria are typically spread through tick bites acquired during outdoor activities in wooded or grassy areas. Early detection and treatment are crucial, as untreated Lyme disease can lead to complications affecting the joints, heart, and nervous system.

Laboratory Testing for Lyme Disease

The only standardised laboratory method for diagnosing Lyme borreliosis is serological testing, which detects the immune system’s response to the infection. These tests are designed to identify antibodies produced against Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto, the specific strain responsible for Lyme disease.

Understanding IgM and IgG Antibody Responses

IgM antibodies are the first to appear and typically indicate a recent or current infection.

IgG antibodies appear later and suggest past exposure or a more advanced stage of the disease.

It is important to note that serological tests may not show a positive result until the body has had sufficient time to produce detectable levels of antibodies.
