Brucella IgM

The Brucella IgM blood test is a medical test that measures the level of IgM antibodies to Brucella bacteria in the blood. Brucella bacteria are a group of bacteria that can cause a disease called brucellosis, which can affect both humans and animals. The Brucella IgM blood test is used to diagnose acute brucellosis, which is the early stage of the disease. It is typically ordered when a person has symptoms of brucellosis, such as fever, fatigue, joint pain, and muscle aches, or has been exposed to Brucella bacteria through contact with infected animals or animal products. When a person is infected with Brucella bacteria, their immune system produces IgM antibodies to fight the infection. The Brucella IgM blood test measures the level of these antibodies in the blood. A positive result on the Brucella IgM blood test indicates that a person has an acute or recent infection with Brucella bacteria. However, a negative result does not necessarily rule out the possibility of brucellosis, as it may take several weeks for IgM antibodies to appear in the blood after infection.
