Culture - Skin Swab
A culture skin swab refers to the process of collecting a sample of material from the skin to obtain cells or other material that may be used to diagnose an infection or other medical condition. The collected sample is then cultured in a laboratory, meaning it is placed in a special growth medium that promotes the growth of any microorganisms that may be present. The results of the culture can be used to identify the specific type of bacteria or fungus causing an infection, and help determine the most appropriate course of treatment. Skin swab cultures are commonly used to diagnose skin infections such as impetigo (a bacterial skin infection) and ringworm (a fungal skin infection). Target organism: Staphylococcus aureus; Candida spp.; Streptococcus of Lancefield group A; Pseudomonas spp.; Other organisms in pure growth may be significant.
