Culture - Throat Swab

A culture throat swab refers to the process of collecting a sample of material from the back of the throat to obtain cells or other material that may be used to diagnose an infection or other medical condition. The collected sample is then cultured in a laboratory, meaning it is placed in a special growth medium that promotes the growth of any microorganisms that may be present. The results of the culture can be used to identify the specific type of bacteria or virus causing an infection, and help determine the most appropriate course of treatment. Throat swab cultures are commonly used to diagnose respiratory infections such as streptococcal pharyngitis (strep throat) and tonsillitis.
