About this test

What Is the CMV IgG Test?

The CMV IgG test is a blood test used to detect immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies to cytomegalovirus (CMV), a widespread virus that belongs to the herpesvirus family. This test helps determine if a person has had a previous CMV infection.

Understanding Cytomegalovirus (CMV)

CMV is a common viral infection that can affect individuals of all ages. It often presents with mild or no symptoms, but in some cases, it may cause:

Fever

Fatigue

Muscle aches

Swollen lymph nodes

While the infection may go unnoticed in healthy individuals, it can be more serious in people with weakened immune systems and during pregnancy.

Role of IgG Antibodies in CMV Diagnosis

IgG antibodies are produced by the immune system several weeks after initial CMV exposure and typically remain in the body for life. The presence of CMV IgG antibodies indicates that a person has been infected in the past and has developed immunity.

However, a positive CMV IgG result does not confirm a current or active infection and should not be interpreted in isolation.

When CMV IgG Testing Is Recommended

CMV IgG testing is commonly recommended for:

Pregnant women to determine pre-existing immunity to CMV, as a primary infection during pregnancy may pose risks to the developing fetus

Individuals undergoing organ transplants or immunosuppressive therapy

Patients with unexplained fatigue or other CMV-related symptoms
