Cytomegalovirus IgM (CMV IgM)

CMV IgM is a blood test used to detect the presence of IgM antibodies to cytomegalovirus (CMV), which is a common viral infection. CMV is a member of the herpesvirus family and can cause a wide range of symptoms, including fever, fatigue, muscle aches, and swollen glands. IgM antibodies are the first antibodies produced by the immune system in response to an infection, and are typically detectable within a few days to a few weeks of initial exposure. The CMV IgM test is used to diagnose recent or current infections with this virus. The presence of CMV IgM antibodies suggests that a person has been recently infected with the virus, and may still be actively fighting the infection. However, it is important to note that CMV IgM antibodies may also be present in individuals with reactivated CMV infections or in those with previous infections who have a weakened immune system. CMV IgM testing may be ordered for pregnant women who have recently been infected with CMV, as this can pose a risk to the developing fetus. It may also be ordered for individuals with symptoms of a recent or active CMV infection, or for those who have a weakened immune system and are at increased risk for complications from the infection.
