Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)
DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a hormone produced by the adrenal gland. It is a precursor to other hormones, including testosterone and estrogen, and plays a role in the development of male and female sex characteristics. DHEA levels can be measured through a blood test, which can be used to diagnose a variety of conditions. In women, low DHEA levels may be a sign of adrenal insufficiency, a condition in which the adrenal glands do not produce enough hormones. Symptoms of adrenal insufficiency may include fatigue, muscle weakness, and decreased sex drive. In men, low DHEA levels may be a sign of decreased testosterone levels, which can cause symptoms such as low sex drive, erectile dysfunction, and fatigue.
