Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate (DHEA-S)

Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. It is a precursor to both testosterone and estrogen and is therefore considered an androgen. DHEA-S levels can be measured through a blood test and are used to evaluate adrenal gland function, as well as to diagnose and monitor certain conditions related to androgen excess, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), adrenal hyperplasia, and androgen-secreting tumors. In women, DHEA-S levels may also be tested to evaluate fertility issues or to monitor treatment for menopausal symptoms. In men, DHEA-S levels may be tested to evaluate low testosterone levels or to monitor treatment for erectile dysfunction or other conditions related to androgen deficiency.
