About this test

Overview of Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV)

Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), also known as Human Herpesvirus 4 (HHV-4), is a DNA virus that belongs to the herpesvirus family. It is one of the most widespread human viruses globally and can remain dormant in the body after initial infection.

Transmission of EBV

EBV is primarily transmitted through direct contact with saliva. Most individuals become infected during early childhood, often without noticeable symptoms. However, the virus can be spread through kissing, sharing drinks or utensils, and close personal contact.

EBV and Infectious Mononucleosis

When EBV infection occurs during adolescence or early adulthood, it frequently leads to infectious mononucleosis. Common symptoms include:

Fatigue

Fever

Sore throat

Swollen lymph nodes

Enlarged tonsils or spleen

Connection Between EBV and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

In some individuals, EBV has been suggested as a contributing factor to chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), a condition characterised by persistent, unexplained fatigue that is not alleviated by rest.

Role of Serologic Testing for EBV

Serologic tests are used to detect antibodies to EBV in the blood. These tests help determine whether an individual has a current or past infection and can provide important diagnostic information, especially in cases of prolonged fatigue or suspected mononucleosis.
