C-Reactive Protein (CRP)
C-reactive protein is a type of protein that is produced by the liver in response to inflammation in the body. The CRP blood test is used to detect and monitor inflammation in the body. Inflammation is a normal response to injury or infection, but excessive or prolonged inflammation can be a sign of an underlying medical condition, such as autoimmune disorders, infections, or cardiovascular disease. The CRP blood test is often used in conjunction with other tests, such as the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) test, to help diagnose and monitor a variety of conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, inflammatory bowel disease, infections, and cardiovascular disease. It is important to note that the CRP blood test is a general indicator of inflammation and does not provide information about the specific cause of inflammation. Further testing may be necessary to determine the underlying cause of inflammation and develop an appropriate treatment plan.
