H. pylori is a type of bacteria that infects your stomach. It can damage the tissue in your stomach and the first part of your small intestine (the duodenum). This can cause inflammation so it is very important to quickly diagnose and cure. It is a spiral-shaped bacterium that can cause gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining), peptic ulcers (sores in the stomach or small intestine), and in some cases, stomach cancer.
