About this test

What Is Hepatitis B e Antigen (HBeAg)?
Hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) is a viral protein produced by the pre-C/C gene of the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It is typically found in liver cells during active replication of the virus and serves as an important marker of viral activity.

Role of HBeAg in Acute Hepatitis B Infection
HBeAg appears in the bloodstream during the early phase of acute HBV infection and is usually detectable for a short duration—ranging from days to weeks. Its presence indicates active viral replication and high levels of infectivity.

Transition from HBeAg to Anti-HBe
As patients begin to recover from acute hepatitis B, HBeAg is typically the first serological marker to disappear. It is soon replaced by its corresponding antibody, known as anti-HBe. This transition is a key indicator of the body's immune response and progression towards recovery.

HBeAg-Negative Infections and Precore Mutants
In some cases, acute or chronic HBV infections may occur without detectable HBeAg. The presence of anti-HBe in these individuals may indicate infection with precore stop codon mutants of HBV. These mutant strains can result in varying viral loads—ranging from high to undetectable.

Combined Use of HBeAg and Anti-HBe Testing
Testing for both HBeAg and anti-HBe provides valuable insights into the phase and activity of hepatitis B infection. It helps clinicians monitor disease progression, assess infectivity, and guide treatment decisions.

Private HBeAg and Anti-HBe Testing in Slough
Individuals in Slough, Windsor, Maidenhead, and surrounding Berkshire areas can access private HBeAg and anti-HBe testing for comprehensive evaluation of hepatitis B infection. Early and accurate detection supports effective disease management and long-term liver health.
