Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR)

What Is the Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) Test?

The Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) test is a blood screening test used to detect syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. The test identifies non-specific antibodies that the body produces in response to the infection.

How the RPR Test Works

The RPR test detects antibodies not only related to syphilis but also those produced in response to other conditions such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. Because of this, a positive RPR result is typically followed by a confirmatory test—such as the Treponemal Antibody Test (TAT)—to establish an accurate diagnosis.

Use of RPR in Syphilis Screening

The RPR test is widely used for routine STI screening, particularly in areas like Slough and neighbouring regions such as Windsor, Langley, Maidenhead, and Burnham. It is also a standard part of prenatal care, as early detection and treatment are essential to prevent the transmission of syphilis from mother to baby during pregnancy.

Importance of Early Diagnosis and Treatment

Syphilis can lead to serious complications if left untreated, including neurological damage and cardiovascular problems. However, when detected early, syphilis is easily treated with antibiotics. The RPR test plays a crucial role in identifying infection before it progresses.
