What Is the Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) Test?

The Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) test is a blood screening test used to detect syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. The test identifies non-specific antibodies that the body produces in response to the infection.

How the RPR Test Works

The RPR test detects antibodies not only related to syphilis but also those produced in response to other conditions such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. Because of this, a positive RPR result is typically followed by a confirmatory test—such as the Treponemal Antibody Test (TAT)—to establish an accurate diagnosis.
